Sacred Timbavati
Kingdom of White Lions

The story of the "sacred" Timbavati, the only place on Earth where white lions were seen in the wild.

Timbavati – continued ….
For those just starting here – Timbavati is a small Game Reserve Park in South Africa next to the famous Kruger National Park.

It is the only place on Earth where the white lions were living in the wild. If you want to start reading the story of white lions from the beginning then please click: White Lions Cubs  - previous ( page 1)

If not (anyhow, you will have this opportunity also at the end of this page), so let’s continue….

The white lion cubs from Timbavati were captured and subsequently originated the bloodline of many of white lions currently living in captivity.

Regardless of how bad it sounds most likely this operation saved their lives and at the same time years later made possible for us to marvel at these magnificent animals in Zoo parks.

Bloodline of Sofia (mother of white cubs from Buenos Aires Zoo) is linked to the famous Timbavati white lions for the first time observed in 70's.

The white lions are almost snow-white when born. With time their fur color slightly changes to more like "milky-tea" one. For comparison on the left you can see the typical tawny lion.

Close up and personal - with lions (and not only white) is possible only for a short time...:-)

It is interesting to note that actually all strains of known white lions come from Timbavati park – partially also from another white male captured in 1977 and the third one captured in the late 80’s.

This lineage of white lions gained the largely accepted name: Panthera Leo Krugeri.

Sadly, since the time of discovery to the West, white lions have been hunted and/or captured (at the best) and finally completely extinct from their natural habitat of Timbavati. The last known encounter with a white lion in the wild was recorded in 1994.

This story proved once again that the only thing we learn from the history is that we do not learn anything.

And the legend?, well, is goes somehow like that;

“….. At the beginning of time an angel came down from heaven to the land of Timbavati. Soon after a white lion appeared on earth and chosen this land as the place to live. The color of his fur was a union of all the colors of rainbow, a pure light beyond the shades of all colors. For local people it represented the spirit of Africa – a union of all races……..

What a beautiful story – we may only add that indeed, in the ancient Shangaan language a word “Timbavati” means “a place where star lions came down from heavens”.

I'm sure you loved the Timbavati legend presented here by Free White Lions of Timbavati Pictures.

Certainly it adds to the mysticism of white lions and promotes the uniqueness of the South African's Timbavati Game Reserve.

But in general I hope it helps us also to realize how fragile is the nature, how much we changed it bending the nature laws to our needs.

It should also make us aware of the fact that despite our beautiful and loving human nature we are also on the opposite side of the "spectrum" - the most dangerous "predators".
