Dominica Jungle Bay Resort and Spa offers the retreat for the body and soul. Located on the forested hills of Caribbean Nature Island, it’s an idyllic place for Honeymooners and great base for seasoned hikers.
Dominica Jungle Bay Resort: In harmony with the Nature
Frankly, Sam and Glenda - the owners of the Jungle Bay Resort & Spa did everything possible to build this resort the way that Dominica does not loose its honorable nickname “The Nature Island”.
The 55-acre resort is nestled in the south-eastern corner of the island of Dominica on the forested hillside overlooking waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
Although the Jungle Bay shares traditional Caribbean sunny and warm climate, it s far from everything else you have been seeing and experiencing throughout other Caribbean islands.
The resort was conceived around the following philosophy:
• Perfect harmony with the surrounding settings;
• Minimum impact of human presence;
• Balance between the Mother Nature and the reasonable comfort for visitors…
• Use of local construction materials, supplies and manpower;
• Support for local communities (local staff and food supply);
• Eco design with minimum waste and maximum “organic” content….
Dominica Jungle Bay Resort: Cottages are hidden in the jungle. They are part of the nature....
If the mission of the resort should be described in one sentence, it could be expressed by 3R formula - something sounding like: Relax the mind, Rejuvenate the soul and Restore the body (and all that by natural means)….
For example to preserve the integrity of the fragile soil and protect the forest all 35 cottages are raised on the wooden posts leaving beneath the undisturbed terrain.
Dominica Jungle Bay Resort: Breathtaking view on the ocean's shore
The elegant rustic cottages provide comfortable living space but no lavish luxury. Built from the tropical hardwood they are designed and furnished to be part of the surrounding nature. For example the semi-attached to the cottage wooden bath makes you feel like taking shower in the middle of the jungle… (yet still in the safety of your cottage).
The furnishing includes wooden bed(s), chairs and desk and few amenities like coffee/tea maker, mini-fridge, safety-box and radio-clock. It is modest, but clean and warm.
Enormous open space for daily Yoga sessions....
Large suspended decks help to blend together the living space with the rainforest. You can spend there long evening hours in the comfort of the hammock gazing at the ocean and overwhelmed by the sound of waves crashing on the rocky shore and scents of wilderness….
And despite the fact that in close proximity there are 34 more cottages you feel like this paradise was offered only to you and your closest one…..
You noticed lack of TV (yes, that is true), but frankly, will you turn on TV or rather listen to the gentle nocturnal concert infiltrating your room? Would you watch another never-ending “soap-opera” or rather lay down falling asleep to the notes of the soothing rainforest's lullaby?
Favorite means of transport - "camouflaged" jeep :-)
Most cottages are hardly visible, hidden behind the verdant tropical vegetation and trees. The best sign of their “presence” deep in the woods are series of footpaths and wooden staircases (some counting more than hundred steps to reach upper level cottages).
The local spa beautifully named “Spa du Soleil” (translates to English as “Sunny Spa”) provides five semi-open studios in the wooden structure attached to the cliff. Full-size windows open calming views on the Atlantic coast; nature fills the space with the soundtrack of “Nature-Live” concert…
This little funny "guy" represents the spirit on the premises...
Gentle sounds of breaking waves, singing birds or croaking frogs and fresh ocean breeze instantly put you “in communion” with the nature…. This “all-organic” ambiance easily puts in shame the effects of combined stereo/quadro/subwoofer technologies …..
Candlelight and/or moonlight adds to this surreal ambiance…..It’s “out-of-this-world”, but this ambiance is only part of the whole body treatment event you will experience in the spa…
Spa du Soleil is also one of the “must-to-do-trips” to comfort your sore muscles given the roughness of Dominica’s mountain treks.
On the premises of the Jungle Bay Resort and Spa there is also the gym, but frankly I did not see anyone choosing to sweat on the treadmill if you can do it on the trail to the Boiling Lake :-).
Little museum and the souvenir shop....
The main loge and administrative structures are built from local volcanic stones. They house offices, souvenir shop and the “Rejuvenation” area with huge open space used for morning Yoga sessions under watchful eyes of Glenda - trained Yoga instructor from Yogi Hari school (she is also practicing Transcendental Meditation).
Talking about body – it’s time to mention food. Pavilion Restaurant serves organic meals - all made from locally grown ingredients. Fish from native fishermen, chicken from the nearby village, juices from locally available fruits like guava, mango, papaya, coconut, passion fruit… This is part of the deal – NO to MacDonalization, YES to local communities and nature….

Swimming pool and gym seem to be here superfluous... Blue waters of the Caribbean Sea and mountain trekking perfectly do the job.
But certainly moments of silence when sitting in the chair with eyes fixed at infinity of the ocean are very precious....
The open-air restaurant wraps around the palm tree. It is one more example of resort’s symbiosis with the nature...
Lovely view on the Pointe Mulâtre Bay and fresh breeze from the ocean “by definition” make it the gourmet place. Frequent visitors – small lizards or birds patiently sitting on the railings remind you that indeed you are in the Jungle (Bay)….
But there is even more adding to the successful story of the Jungle Bay resort and Spa. And this is its enthusiastic, friendly, warm and caring staff.
That is why coming back home even after just few days in the Jungle Bay Resort & Spa is like going to the different world on the different planet, and honestly not necessarily a better one!
Just for the record - for visitors, the Jungle Bay Resort & Spa provides the “package” for the island of Dominica including airport shuttle, guided hiking, island tours, water sports and of course daily spa services.
And now let's see and hear what Sam has to say :-):
Falling in love with Dominica? I do not blame you, it happens to almost everybody visiting this "Nature Island" hidden on the blue waters of the Caribbean Sea. So relax, forget your headaches back home and explore :-):
If you enjoyed this visit, then please share your experience with friends :-)
