Guilin- take the scenic tour of the Fubo Hill with its main attractions: Return the Pearly Cave and the Sword-Testing Rock.
Fubo Hill is also called “Whirlpool Hill” and to add more confusion, to locals it is known as Fuboshan.
The cliffy hill located along the Li River dominates the city offering beautiful vistas.
But to conquer it and enjoy the views you have to climb nearly 350 steps (our guide confessed that the early morning running up the hill is a favorite sport for local college students). The place is famous for its Pearl-Returning Cave with a huge rock hanging from the ceiling almost touching the ground.
The legend has it that the general Fubo (the Han's dynasty hero from about 2000 years ago) tested here his sword by cutting the bottom part of a stone pillar. Indeed there is only a very thin gap left between the bottom of the rock and the ground level.
Seemingly unrealistic engineering achievement even for the Mother Nature known to be so resourceful and "inventive”.

Art and nature.
The cave walls are rich in carved inscriptions from the past, but besides their historical and artistic values it was difficult for me to fully appreciate their message “encrypted” in Chinese characters.
May be you are more fortunate and can translate the message and I believe enormous wisdom carried out by these stones?

Buddhist statues and carved inscriptions along the cave's walls.
Long passage leads to the Thousand-Buddha Cave with numerous Buddhist statues dated from Tang and Song dynasties and more carved inscriptions.

Conquering the Fubo Hill requires some physical effort :-)
Finally there is a time to climb-up more steps and walk along the paths lost in lush vegetation of Fubo Hill. Here and there you will see “dispersed” traditionally valued by East-Asian cultures landscape’s patterns of water and rock…..

On the left - view from the Fubo Hill on the Li River and the city.
BTW - this is a "sunny" day in Guilin, other option is the rain :-)
Almost everything in China reflects the reality and consciousness of its large population – so no wonder that this really, really giant pot located on the top of the hill is called “Pot of a Thousand Men”.
But honestly there is no exaggeration - undoubtedly you can feed thousand if not more from this pot….
Thousand Men Pot.

Before we continue I would like to give you a glimpse of the Li River’s landscape.
"Visions" of the Li River's landscape.
It happened that after conquering the Fubo Hill we stopped in an art gallery, frankly to have a rest after “experience” of all these 350 steps up and down.
Unexpectedly the local artist invited us for the exhibition of sketches, actually making one in front of us. We took the opportunity to test our skills in the graphic art. The results are in front of you – both sketches illustrate an “un-earthly” landscape of the Li River.
Please guess which one was made by our “humble but shaking hands” (the answer is on the bottom of this page).
